KAZIMIR MALEVICH
(1879 – 1935)

World famous U
krainian-Russian Avant-Garde Artist, Graphic Artist, Designer,
Founder and Theoretician of Suprematism

The History of the Perfume bottle of the "SEVERNY EAU DE COLOGNE" (eau de cologne “SEVERNY”)
(Moscow, Imperial Russia / Soviet Russia, RSFSR / Soviet Union, USSR / Russian Federation)

General information:

Design of the Bottle for Eau de cologne "Severny" ("Northern" or "North" in English, "Nord" in French, "EISBäR" in German)  was created by KAZIMIR MALEVICH in 1910 for the Partnership BROCARD & Co. Perfume Company (Moscow, Imperial Russia) by Order of Alexander Brocard, son of Henry Brocard, founder of the Company. Also Malevich was created Advertisement for cologne "Severny", which was first published in early autumn of 1911 in general Moscow's newspapers.

This cologne "Severny" was produced from 1911 till the middle of 1990's (1996 ?) at:
-
Partnership Brocard & Co. Perfume Company (Moscow, Russian Empire): 1911 - till Russian Socialist Revolution in October 1917;
- The State Soap-Perfume Factory # 5 (former Brocard & Co.,Moscow, Soviet Russia / RSFSR): 1918 – 1922 (
Presumably, due to the Civil War in Russia (1917 - 1922), the production of "Severny" cologne could be partially or completely suspended during this period);
- NOVAYA ZARYA Perfume Factory (former Brocard & Co., Moscow, Soviet Union / USSR): 1922 –
1991;
- NOVAYA ZARYA Perfume Factory (former Brocard & Co., Moscow, Russian Federation / Russia): 1991 – middle of 1990’s (1996 ?)

The "Severny" eau de cologne in original Malevich-designed crystal perfume bottle with craquelure was produced from 1911 till 1925 (or approx. first half of 1930's [?]) and this kind of the bottle has never been exhibited in Museums and Galleries outside Russia.
Estimated to date, Malevich's bottles with craquelure in period of 1911 - 1917 have survived just several copies and couple dozens in period of 1922 - 1925 (or approx. first half of 1930's [?]) with TeZHe (TeGe) Logo. It is an extremely rare Art Object and has very high historical and cultural value.

Advertisement for SEVERNY Eau De Cologne by
Kazimir Malevich for Print Media, Poster and Postcard, 1911 - 1917

The basic idea of Malevich's Advertisement published in early autumn of 1911 in major Moscow's Newspapers is a Polar Bear standing on the ice block, which was seen the sun with radiating rays on a black square that embodies the Arctic night. At the bottom there are initials of the Artist: on the left - the letter "K", on the right - the letter "M"... And only in 1915 there will be a first version of the famous "Black Square" painting.

Historical information:

The beginning of the 20th century was a time of great discoveries and bold attempts to reach the North Pole. A huge role in this played the Americans Frederick Cook and Robert Peary in 1908–1909. All over the world there was euphoria.

In 1910 (?), Alexander Brocard, the owner of Brocard & Co. Perfume Company ordered to Malevich the drawing of packing and Advertisement for "Severny eau de cologne". Malevich needed money — then he yet wasn't the known author of suprematist compositions. After the artist developed the bottle sketch, it gave all the drawings to Adele Yakovlevna Yakobson (1876-1942). She was responsible for manufacturing techniques of bottles at Nikolsko-Bakhmetev's Crystal Plant of Prince A.D. Obolensky (Penza Province).

Eau de cologne "Severny" was very popular, it was produced for 85 years, since 1911 till the middle of the 1990s.

Presumably, due to the Civil War in Russia (1917 - 1922), the production of "Severny" cologne could be partially or completely suspended during this period.

These were original Malevich-designed "Severny" bottles with craquelure which used until 1922-1925 (middle of 1930's(?). Presumably, in the first years of Soviet power, bottles from the reserves of the Tsarist era were used and they were marked with soviet logo TeZHe on bottom of a bottle base.

In the period after 1925 and until the end of the production of cologne "Severny" in 1996, the perfume factory "Novaya Zarya" (former Brocard & Co.) made significant design changes in the appearance of the bottle.

Presumably, "SEVERNY cologne" (NORTHERN Cologne) and a bottle of Malevich's design with a polar bear on top of the iceberg of the perfumery firm "Partnership Brocard & Co." were a competitor to "POLYARNY Cologne" (POLAR Cologne) and a bottle with a bas-relief of 5 penguins and 2 penguins on the bottle cap of the perfume company "Partnership of Rallet and Co." during the discovery of the North and South Poles in 1908/1909 - 1912. The author of the bottle design for "Polar Cologne" is unknown.
